'Ron Carter, one of eight children was born near Detroit in 1937. At the age of 10, he began playing cello. By the time he graduated from high school,he was playing bass, violin, clarinet, trombone and the tuba! In the spring of 1955, he won a scholarship to attend the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester. After graduating with a B.A. in Music in 1959, he played briefly with Chico Hamilton before entering the Manhattan School of Music; graduating with a Masters in Bass in 1961.
|Born in Brazil, in 1937, Baden Powell was named after the
founder of the Boy Scouts, Robert Thomepson Baden Powell, of
whome his father was an admirer.
The family moved to Rio when he was four months old. The boy grew up listening to music; his father a show maker by trade and a violinist by calling, held regular get-togethers at home, at which Pixinguiha and Donga, two of Brazil's popular music icons, were always present.
At the age of eight, Baden's father arranged for him to study guitar, introducing him to the world of Brazilian pop music and the classics, especially Spanish master Andres Segovia.
